Child Care Financial Assistance

Child care financial assistance is a payment that helps eligible families with the cost of child care. Payments are made directly to child care providers. Click here for the current provider rate scale. This program is funded through the Agency of Human Services, Department of Children and Families, Child Development Division.

Eligibility Information
In order to be eligible for the child care financial assistance program a family must have a reason (service need) for child care and have income within the established guidelines.

Acceptable service needs and required documentation:
Employment
Employment is defined as any activity for which a primary caretaker receives compensation of at least minimum wage. Two current consecutive pay stubs are required. If you have just begun working a new job and have not yet received two full pay checks, click here for an Employment Verification form to be completed by you and your employer.

Self-Employment
Self-employment is any approved business activity that nets a monthly income equivalent to Vermont minimum wage for the number of hours worked. Copies of your most recent tax filing may be required. Click here for the Profit and Loss and Business Plan forms.

Training or Education
Training is any activity that is likely to lead to employment within one year of completion of the activity. Reach Up activities are included. Verification of enrollment is required. Volunteer work and Post-Baccalaureate education are not eligible activities. Click here for the Training Plan form.

Seeking Employment
Seeking employment is any activity recognized as necessary to obtain employment. This is limited to 30 half days or 15 full days per 12 month period. Click here for the Work Search form.

Special Health Need/Parent
If you are medically incapacitated, a Special Health Needs form may be completed by an MD, Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician's Assistant (PA) or state licensed psychologist.

Under special circumstances described below, Specialized Services Child Care support may also be available.

Family Support
A prevention and early intervention service, Family Support Child Care is designed to reduce stress for families and their children and promote positive child development. The child care subsidy may be authorized after a confidential application, and risk assessment have been completed and reviewed. A Child Care Financial Assistance application with documentation also needs to accompany this application.

Special Health Need/Child
Is a determination verified by the written report of a licensed physician or licensed psychologist, or a determination made by the Department of Education, Division of Special Education, that a child is entitled to services under the Child Care Financial Assistance Program. Families must also qualify under the income guidelines of the financial assistance program.

Protective Services Child Care
Is authorized through a Department for Children and Families, Family Services social worker. Families (including foster families) who are eligible for child care because of a protective services need must use specialized child care providers (child care providers with additional required training). Be sure to give this information to the child care support specialist.
